6 Dog-Friendly Cities to Visit with Your Dog This Summer

3 min read

As more Americans opt to travel with their dogs, cities across America are catering not only to human tourists but to their canine companions as well. Check out one of these dog-friendly cities for a summer trip to remember.

1. Los Angeles, California

Surf’s up for you and your pup! The City of Angels is one of the best options for pet-friendly vacations. A stroll along the Venice Beach Boardwalk or playtime at the Lake Hollywood Dog Park are fun ways to spend your morning with your pup.

When you’re ready to grab a bite to eat, take your dog to the world-famous Fat Dog restaurant in North Hollywood, where even the decor is dog-themed. For a healthy snack check out the Butchers Daughter on Abbott Kinney Boulevard and then get your coffee fix at Tom’s coffee. Both spots will welcome your pooch and Tom’s even has a doggy patio in the back. When it’s time to call it a day, snuggle up with your pooch at the fun and pet-friendly Hotel Indigo in downtown LA.

2. Kennebunkport, Maine

On the opposite side of the country, you’ll find one of the best hotspots for pet-friendly vacations in the world. Kennebunkport is home to dog-friendly transportation, miles of scenic hiking trails and beaches, and popular dog parks like the highly-rated Kennebunkport Dog Park.

Also famous for its food, Kennebunkport has plenty of dog-friendly restaurants like the Colony Hotel, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean via its own private beach. Owners and their pets are welcome to stay at the property or just drop in for dinner and to admire the view.

3. Marin County/San Francisco Bay Area

If outdoor adventures are more your speed, few areas can beat beautiful Marin County in the San Francisco Bay area. The volunteer-managed Sausalito Dog Park is nestled in the heart of Sausalito’s scenic, seaside town with plenty of shade and separate areas for large and small dogs.

Just down the street, you and your dog can enjoy beautiful ocean views and delicious, fresh seafood at Fish, one of Marin County’s best oceanside eateries. At night, book a room at the eclectic Sir Francis Drake Hotel in San Francisco, where your dog will be treated like royalty in one of the stylishly-appointed pet-friendly guest rooms.

4. Manchester, Vermont

On the east coast, the great outdoors calls with spacious, off-leash parks like the Manchester Dog Park–a favorite for locals and tourists alike. Manchester is notoriously pet-friendly. Hotels like the Wilburton Inn allow pets to join you for breakfast and gourmet restaurants like the Ponce Bistro will welcome dogs to enjoy a world-class dining experience with their owners.

5. Brooklyn, New York

If bright lights, big city is more to your linking, Brooklyn has countless parks, restaurants, and hotels for you and your dog to enjoy. Prospect Park’s “Dog Beach” recently reopened as one of New York’s premier off-leash dog parks–complete with a fenced-in swimming area to test out that doggy paddle.

After a day at the dog park, cool off with a refreshing beverage (and a bowl of ice water for your dog) at the Lucky Dog. It  has a pet-friendly backyard where your pet can make friends with the other patrons. And call it a night at the 1 Brooklyn Bridge Hotel where your dog will be treated like a VIP.

6. Savannah, Georgia

Known for its southern charm, Savannah has many beautiful parks and dining options to enjoy with your dog. Our favorite dog friendly walk is at the Bonaventure Cemetery which is chock full of Savannah and southern history. We also love the Tybee Island Dog Park. While dogs aren’t allowed on the beach, they do have the freedom to run inside one of the park’s shady, fenced areas (separated by dog size).

Near Savannah’s peaceful waterfront, the exquisitely furnished Bohemian Hotel welcomes pets and their owners to enjoy luxury amenities and southern hospitality inside Savannah’s Historic District. And most restaurants along the riverwalk will allow your dog to hang out on their outdoor patios.
